Now I'm ready to share one more that you will LOVE!
My Favorite Rolling Hack
This rolling hack is for anyone whose baby is close to five months of age and is not rolling yet. To practice it you will need a baby playmat that has arches from which you hang toys. (Like the one in the picture above). They are super popular so chances are you already have one.
The first step is to detach the arches and move them down to the floor. Our babies learn to move by where their toys are located. Babies move towards stimulation and are highly motivated by their toys.
If your baby is not rolling yet and you continue to lie them under the play arches where toys are dangling right on top of them, they will not move or attempt to go anywhere.
However, if you move the toys down to the side your baby will be much more motivated to roll and go after their toys. Simply drop the baby arches and you will see your child start to move toward the toys.
This rolling hack is magical because babies are motivated by their toys and the things that are around them in their environment. I have so many moms that have tried this trick and their babies start to roll immediately or within 2-3 days.
Obviously, this doesn’t work for every single baby and that's okay! If this is not the magical button, don’t stress. You may need a little more of a nudge in the right direction to help your baby learn how to roll. You might need some extra strategies or activities.
That is where my Rolling Master Class can help!
Why 5 Months?
Moving back a little bit, babies learn to reach and grasp. They start batting at the toys under the arches around 2-3 months. This is the perfect time to use the arches. However, by 4 months, babies should be reaching up with both hands to get those toys.
As they move towards 5 months their reaching strategies should be on point. They should not need the toys perfectly placed and they should be able to manipulate their environment in combination with rolling.
This is why we want to move your baby beyond static reaching and give them reaching plus movement. Rolling to reach the toy that is a little out of their grasp is the ultimate goal.
Soon, they will learn how to sequentially roll and crawl. This is all with the intention of getting them to play. You want to give them independent options and not rely on you to put them on their back. They can choose which way to roll and which toys to go after.
This will quickly put them on their way to independent mobility!
